Vui (V/R), Oct. 29, GNA- Mr Raymond Fiabor, a businessman dealing in building materials, has donated football jerseys and a football to Vui A.M.E. Zion No. 2 School at Keta in the Volta Region to promote sporting activities and improve pupils’ participation in sports.

The donation forms part of the continued support for the school, which has also benefited from educational materials, including books and pens, to enhance teaching and learning.

Mr Fiabor in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the school’s Headteacher and staff had earlier submitted a proposal seeking assistance, which motivated him to respond to their request despite his limited resources.

“I consider the support a worthwhile investment in the future of the pupils, whom I described as the young leaders of tomorrow, and l am committed to contributing to their development through education and sports,” he said.

Mr Fiabor explained that the school previously relied on hiring football jerseys, balls and other sporting materials from nearby teams whenever it wanted to participate in sporting activities.

He said the donation would enable the school to own its sporting equipment and use it for subsequent sporting activities without the financial burden of repeatedly hiring such materials.

“The bulk of the funding for the gesture come from my personal resources, although a few individuals had supported the initiative to help make the donation possible.”

Mr Fiabor emphasised that he had also taken note of the furniture deficit affecting the school and pledged to help address the challenge to improve the learning environment for the pupils.

He appealed to other philanthropists, individuals and corporate organisations to support schools and educational institutions in their communities and stated that some parents lacked the financial means to provide all the necessities their children required.

He said although the government had a major responsibility for providing educational infrastructure and resources, it could not address every need alone, which made private sector and community support important to educational development.

Mr William Dumeda, Headteacher of Vui A.M.E. Zion No. 2 School, who received the items on behalf of the institution, expressed gratitude and excitement over the donation, and described it as timely support for the school’s sporting activities.

He assured Mr Fiabor that the school would take proper care of the jerseys and football to ensure they served their intended purpose and appealed to other benevolent individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture and support the school’s development.

Mr Dumeda also appealed to the government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to post additional teachers to the school to ease the workload on existing staff and improve teaching and learning, particularly in practical subjects.

He lamented that Career Technology, for instance, was being handled by only one teacher instead of the three he said were needed, a situation he explained placed considerable pressure on the available staff and called for urgent attention to ensure effective teaching and learning.
