Tamale, October 29, GNA – Yumba Special School in the Tamale Metropolis has appealed to Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education to urgently intervene to address its infrastructure and logistical challenges.

Hajia Fati Mahama, Assistant Headmistress, Yumba Special School, who made the appeal, said the school, which catered for about 115 children with disabilities, faced several challenges affecting teaching, learning and the general welfare of the learners.

She said the school had recently transitioned from a day-school system to a boarding facility with learners accommodated in dormitories and provided with three meals daily.

Hajia Mahama made the appeal when management of Shekinah Glory Bakery paid a courtesy call on the school and donated assorted items including rice, cooking oil, sugar, toilet rolls, educational materials among others to the school.

She explained that the transition to a boarding facility had increased the demand for essential resources especially water, food and other supplies needed to cater for the children.

She said the school lacked reliable water supply and depended on purchased water to meet its daily needs including cooking, cleaning and maintaining hygiene.

Hajia Mahama also expressed concern about the condition of some classrooms saying they had developed cracks and required urgent rehabilitation to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.

She touched on transportation challenges saying the school had four vehicles comprising a pick-up, two minibuses and a larger bus, which were provided in 2012 but had since broken down.

Mr Samuel Baah Ofori, Co-Chief Executive Officer, Shekinah Glory Bakery said the donation was to support the feeding and educational needs of the learners.

He said the company decided to assist the school following an earlier engagement with a group that had visited the institution and drawn attention to its needs.

He said caring for and educating children with disabilities required considerable commitment and resources urging the public, businesses and philanthropists to support the school.
