Accra, Oct. 13, GNA – An 87-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a nine-year-old girl at Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
Preliminary investigations indicated that on August 29, 2026, the complainant, who is the mother of the victim, returned from work and noticed bloodstains on her daughter’s clothing.
Chief Superintendent of Police Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, Accra Regional Police Command, said in a press release copied to the Ghana News Agency that the child, upon questioning, disclosed that the convict, identified as Gahornu, had subjected her to repeated sexual abuse between July and August 2026.
The abuse involved vaginal and anal penetration, while further investigations revealed that the convict lured the child to his sleeping quarters and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the abuse to her mother.
The release said the convict’s granddaughter reportedly witnessed an incident on August 31, 2026, and subsequently informed family members, including the complainant, leading to his arrest after the matter was reported to the Police.
Gahornu was charged and arraigned at the Gender-Based Violence Court at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Headquarters, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defilement.
“The Accra Regional Police Command welcomes the outcome of the case and reiterates its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons,” the release quoted Chief Superintendent Obeng as saying.
The Command urged the public to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the Police for investigation and appropriate action.
