Koforidua, Oct. 01, GNA – Global disability activist, Mr Yaw Ofori-Debra has welcomed growing efforts by political parties in Ghana and across Africa to include Persons with Disabilities in political leadership and decision-making.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Ofori-Debra cited the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) amendment of its constitution to create executive positions for Persons with Disabilities at the constituency, regional and national levels.

“This provides an important opportunity for Persons with Disabilities to participate directly in the party’s leadership and decision-making,” he said.

Mr Ofori-Debra said at least 250 NPP members with disabilities were expected to attend the party’s National Congress in Kumasi on October 3.

He said they would join other members to discuss key party matters and participate in the election of national executives.

“This is a significant step towards strengthening the political participation and representation of Persons with Disabilities,” he said.

Mr Ofori-Debra commended the NPP for promoting disability inclusion within its organisational structures.

He encouraged Persons with Disabilities to take an active interest in political activities, including partisan politics.

“They must contribute to shaping policies, programmes and development initiatives that affect their lives and communities,” he stated.

Mr Ofori-Debra also urged other political parties to create meaningful opportunities for Persons with Disabilities to serve in leadership and take part in decision-making at all levels.

“Disability inclusion must be an integral part of national life,” he stressed.

“When Persons with Disabilities have a seat at the decision-making table, their voices, experiences and perspectives can help build a more inclusive society for all,” he said.

Mr Ofori-Debra stressed that representation must go beyond creating positions and ensure that Persons with Disabilities have real influence over decisions.

“Political inclusion is meaningful only when Persons with Disabilities can shape policies, contest leadership positions and hold institutions accountable,” he said.

He said their full participation would strengthen democracy and help build a fairer and more inclusive society.
