Lawra (UWR), Oct. 25, GNA – Mr Bede A. Ziedeng, Member of Parliament (MP) for Lawra Constituency, says he is ready to work with any executive team elected for the constituency in the ongoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Executive elections.
He dismissed allegations that he was sponsoring a particular group of aspirants and said he had maintained a neutral position throughout the electioneering period in the interests of the party in the constituency.
Mr Ziedeng, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Lawra during the elections, described the allegations as mere mischievous propaganda intended to mislead party members.
“Every single contestant has had the opportunity to approach me, and I can tell you for sure that almost every contestant approached me. The little that I had to support that person, I gave it to that person”, he said.
The MP stressed that in the event that any of the candidates who were deemed his choice won the election, that would reflect the confidence the delegates had in the person rather than any backing from him.
“I am the MP for the whole constituency, and I support every single contestant. I want this election to be as peaceful as possible, and so, as much as possible, I have stayed out of it”, he said.
Mr Ziedeng expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the orderly conduct of the exercise so far, expressing optimism that the process would end without skirmishes.
On her part, Madam Cecilia Nuratu Soyelleh, Lawra Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), expressed optimism that the exercise would produce a mature and committed executive team capable of working diligently for the party rather than pursuing personal interests.
“My expectation is that, at the end of the day, we should be able to compose or recompose a very mature team, people who are ready to work for the party, people who will be working with passion, but not personal interest or selfishness”, she said.
The MCE urged contestants and delegates to ensure that the elections ended peacefully, to ensure the party would remain united.
Meanwhile, Mr Paschal Kob, NDC’s Lawra Constituency Director of Elections, said the exercise was progressing smoothly.
He said 827 out of the 837 delegates were expected to vote because ten branch executives resigned to contest constituency executive positions in the ongoing election.
A total of 68 candidates were contesting the various executive positions in the Lawra Constituency.
At the Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency, Mr David Dong Tinyaa, the Constituency Director of Elections, told the GNA that the exercise was progressing smoothly, with 1055 delegates expected to cast their votes in the election contested by 57 aspirants.
As at about 10:20 am, when the GNA got to the McCoy College of Education in Nadowli, where the election was being conducted, 123 delegates had cast their votes.
