Ho, Oct 29, GNA- MTN Ghana has said sustainability is now at the core of its Ambition 2030 corporate strategy, as the company pushes to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Speaking at MTN Volta Regional Media and Stakeholders Engagement in Ho, Ms Sheila Sorinye, Community Relations Advisor, MTN Ghana said the telecoms giant had moved sustainability from being part of its previous Ambition 2025 strategy to the centre of its new Ambition 2030, describing it as a way of life aimed at leaving a legacy for four generations to come.
She said as a responsible multinational, MTN Ghana was not only implementing sustainable practices internally but was also requiring its suppliers to adopt sustainable sourcing in all their operations.
Ms Sorinye said, the company was implementing several initiatives under its four sustainability pillars – Doing for People, Doing for Growth, Doing it Right, and Doing for Planet.
Under Doing for Planet, MTN was transitioning its cell sites from diesel to solar to reduce carbon emissions, part of efforts to achieve Net Zero by 2040.
She added that the commitment to sustainability was visible at MTN House in Accra, where the company had installed solar, “segregates waste for recycling, uses sensor lights in washrooms, and harvests rainwater to water plants.”
Ms Sorinye said the company observed Sustainability August this year with recycling and other environmentally friendly activities, stressing that sustainability had become a lifestyle at MTN, not just a month-long campaign.
She noted that sustainability affects everyone and called on stakeholders, especially the media in the Volta Region, to join the journey by using their platforms to educate the public on responsible lifestyles, sustainable sourcing and environmental protection.
“We are creating awareness and inviting you to be part of this journey. It is not just an MTN journey, it is a journey we all must embark on to support our planet.”
The forum Wednesday, attended by media practitioners from various parts of Volta Region and the National Communications Authority, Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghana Police Service, provided an opportunity for the stakeholders to share feedback, express their views, and make recommendations to help MTN Ghana improve its services and strengthen its relationship with the communities it serves.
The engagement also helped MTN Ghana provide updates on the its achievements, ongoing initiatives, and future which included network infrastructure and investments, and supporting the government agenda through tax payments and digital skills training.
Ms Efua Falconer, Acting Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, MTN Ghana urged the media in the Volta Region to sensitise the public on the company’s interventions, such as the Bright Scholarship programme, to enable brilliant but needy students in the region to benefit, and the Heroes of Change initiative which recognises individuals transforming lives in communities in the region.
The engagement also expressed gratitude to the people of the Volta Region for being with the company throughout its three decades journey.
“Our promise is clear: to keep improving the network, expanding digital opportunities, protecting customer trust and investing in interventions that matter to the people of the Volta Region. As we celebrate 30 years of progress, powered by you, we look to the future with gratitude, responsibility and renewed commitment,” Mr David Gyimah Boadi, General Manager, Southern Ghana, MTN Ghana said.
