MTN Engages Bogoso community, trains students in cyber safety

By Mildred Siabi-Mensah

Bogoso (WR), Oct. 14, GNA – The MTN Ghana has intensified its community engagement efforts on network expansion, customer protection, and cybersecurity education in the Bogoso area of the Western Region.

The engagements sought to strengthen relationships with stakeholders, address community concerns, protect telecommunications infrastructure and equip young people with the knowledge to navigate the digital space safely.

Mr Kennedy Ofosuhene, the Corporate Services Advisor for Southern Ghana, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the community forum was organised to solicit feedback from residents and promote stronger collaboration between the company and its stakeholders.

He expressed gratitude to the people of Bogoso for their loyalty and support throughout MTN’s 30 years of operations in Ghana.

Mr Ofosuhene outlined the company’s four sustainability pillars: Doing for Planet, Doing for People, Doing it Right, and Doing for Growth, explaining how they supported its contribution to national development.

Under Doing for Planet, he highlighted MTN’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 through initiatives such as solar-powered facilities, energy-efficient technologies and biodegradable SIM cards.

Doing for People focuses on social inclusion, diversity and community investment, particularly through the MTN Ghana Foundation’s interventions in education, health and economic empowerment.

Doing it Right emphasises ethical conduct, transparency, accountability and sound corporate governance, while Doing for Growth promotes economic development through digital infrastructure investment, financial inclusion and skills development.

Miss Jessica Woode, Network Operations Engineer, updated participants on network improvement and expansion plans under MTN’s Ambition 2030 strategy.

She said the investments were intended to improve upon connectivity and provide faster, more reliable voice and data services to more communities.

Miss Woode appealed to residents to help protect telecommunications infrastructure, particularly fibre-optic cables, which she said were frequently damaged by illegal mining activities and road construction works.

She explained that protecting the infrastructure was essential to maintaining reliable network services.

Mr Daniel Otoo, the Tarkwa Territory Sales Controller, cautioned residents against sharing sensitive Mobile Money information, including personal identification numbers (PINs), one-time passwords and personal details, with strangers or through unverified channels.

He said fraudsters often exploited such information to defraud unsuspecting customers and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.

Mr Lovelace Mensah, the Coordinator for Community Shops, said customers could access support through MTN community shops and digital channels without necessarily visiting the company’s traditional offices.

He said the alternative service points offered convenient ways for customers to resolve complaints, purchase products and obtain assistance.

The MTN delegation visited St. Augustine Senior High School, where students participated in an interactive session on cybersecurity.

The session covered common online threats, safe internet practices and the importance of protecting personal information in an increasingly digital environment.

The students were also encouraged to consider cybersecurity and related information technology disciplines when pursuing tertiary education.

They were urged to take advantage of the MTN BRIGHT programme, which supports students at the tertiary level.
