Accra, Oct. 9, GNA – The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in collaboration with Ghanaian authorities, has raided suspected scam centres in Ghana, arresting more than 130 people and seizing over 300 electronic devices.
Mr Kash Patel, FBI Director, said the operation had so far identified nearly US$10 million in losses linked to 89 victims.
He said some of those detained were victims of human trafficking and would be repatriated to their home countries.
The raids formed part of Operation Blackout, a global campaign targeting organised scam compounds involved in defrauding people, particularly Americans.
Mr Patel said the FBI was working to dismantle such networks worldwide, adding that investigations into the Ghana operation were ongoing.
Information on the wider campaign indicates that authorities have seized about US$17 billion and arrested hundreds of suspected scammers.
The campaign has also led to the rescue of thousands of trafficked workers and helped warn more than 10,000 Americans before they lost money, preventing an estimated US$670 million in potential losses.
