AUCB graduates threaten court action over graduation list

By Opesika Tetteh Puplampu

Accra, Oct. 21, GNA – Seventy-five Level 400 graduates of the African University of Communication and Business (AUCB) have threatened legal action against the university over alleged unequal treatment in the publication of graduation lists for students seeking University of Ghana (UG) certificates.

The graduates, members of the 2022/2023 admission cohort, are demanding the publication of their full academic particulars, including index numbers, programmes of study and degree classifications.

In a letter dated October 20, 2026, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of AUCB, their lawyers, Freshfields Law Consult, gave the university seven days from receipt of the letter to comply with the demands.

The lawyers warned that failure to comply would result in legal action at the High Court, including an application for an injunction to restrain the university from holding its 23rd congregation scheduled for October 31, 2026.

The lawyers said the graduates were concerned about what they described as disparities between two graduation lists published by the university’s Academic Registry on October 6.

According to the letter, the list for students graduating with AUCB certificates contained their index numbers, full names, departments or schools, and degree classifications, including First Class and Second-Class honours.

The lawyers, however, alleged that the list for students seeking University of Ghana certification omitted details of their academic performance, cumulative grade point averages and degree classifications, leaving only their names.

They described the omission as discriminatory and unfair, arguing that all graduating students should receive equal treatment in the publication of their academic records.

The lawyers also alleged that the omission could undermine the academic standing of their clients and put pressure on them to abandon their preference for University of Ghana certificates.

They maintained that AUCB’s position that the University of Ghana would determine the students’ final grade point averages and degree classifications did not justify withholding academic particulars already in the university’s possession.

The lawyers are demanding that AUCB republish the graduation list with the complete academic particulars of the affected students and transmit the records to the Registrar and Academic Affairs Directorate of the University of Ghana without further delay.

They stated that if the university failed to comply within the stipulated seven days, they had instructions to initiate legal proceedings without further notice.

Among the reliefs the graduates intend to seek are declarations that the publication was discriminatory and unfair, orders compelling the university to publish the complete academic particulars, and an interlocutory injunction restraining the October 31 congregation until the students’ academic profiles are properly published and transmitted.

They are also seeking damages and legal costs.

The letter was copied to the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of the University of Ghana, the Chairman of AUCB’s Governing Council, and the Dean of Student Affairs.
