Kwansakrom (C/R), Oct. 11, GNA – The Agona East Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has conducted assessment of the fire which gutted the Carolina International School’s boy’s dormitory at Agona Kwansakrom in the Central region.

The incident which occurred on Saturday, October 3, between 12:00 and 15:00 hours, caused significant destruction to property at the boy’s dormitory, displacing about 28 primary pupils and Junior High School (JHS) students between the ages of 12 and15.

Mr Seth Williams, the Agona East District Director of NADMO, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kwansakrom that his office had visited the school to assess the extent of damage and its impact on affected pupils and students.

Mr William said report from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Municipality was that the intense fire was brought under control with no casualties.

The District NADMO Director said preliminary report from GNFS indicated that an electrical fault from a rechargeable fan may have caused the fire outbreak which extensively damaged the newly constructed boy’s dormitory.

‘’Because the items in the room were highly inflammable the whole place was engulfed in flames, the NADMO Director quoted the GNFS.

The items destroyed included mattresses, trunks, chop boxes, stationery, clothing, foot wears, school materials and other personal belongings running into several thousands of cedis and cash of GHC 1,500.00.

He said the displaced people were currently putting up with others, and urgently in need of assistance both in kind and cash to enable them resume classes.

Mr Williams said NADMO has intensified its education campaigns in various communities in the Agona East District on preventive measures to curb preventable domestic fire disasters to save lives and property.

Meanwhile, Mr Kobena Donkoh, the Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association of the school has sent ‘SOS’ message through NADMO to the government and other institutions to support the school with mattresses, clothing, foodstuffs, roofing sheets, cement, money   and other essential relief items for classes to resume.
