Takoradi, Sept. 18, GNA – The Western Nzema Youth League (WNYL), a youth group, has called on Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to reflect on the governance and enduring legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The call comes ahead of this year’s Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day commemoration on September 21, 2026.
Dr Patrick Ekye Kwesie, the Leader of the WNYL, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said Dr Nkrumah’s leadership placed strong emphasis on national development, industrialisation, education, infrastructure and the broader Pan-African vision.
He said his determination to position Ghana as an independent and influential voice in Africa remained an important part of the country’s history.
“We describe Nkrumah as a prophet without honour in his own land because several of the ideas he championed, including African unity, economic self-reliance and industrial development, continue to generate discussion in Ghana and across the continent,” he added.
Dr Kwesie acknowledged that while Dr Nkrumah’s administration had its controversies and shortcomings, the Western Nzema Youth League believed his legacy should be studied objectively, with both his achievements and failures providing lessons for present and future generations.
He, therefore, urged Ghanaian youth to go beyond political narratives and engage critically with Nkrumah’s ideas, vision, and contribution to Ghana’s independence and Africa’s liberation.
He said: “As his birthday approaches, the Western Nzema Youth League honours the memory of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and calls for renewed commitment to the principles of national development, African unity, and self-determination.”
