SIGA commends GNA on financial performance, governance compliance

Accra, Sept. 2, GNA – The State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) has commended the Ghana News Agency (GNA) for improving its financial performance and governance compliance.

The improvements were captured in SIGA’s 2025 State Ownership Report, which showed that GNA’s total income increased by 8.49 per cent, from GHS14.37 million in 2024 to GHS15.59 million in 2025.

SIGA said the increase in revenue contributed to a reduction in GNA’s deficit, which narrowed from GHS1.23 million in 2024 to GHS0.46 million in 2025.

The report said despite operating in a challenging financial environment, GNA maintained progress in revenue mobilisation and improved its overall fiscal position.

It also showed that the Agency’s short-term debt coverage ratio increased from 0.03 in 2024 to 0.27 in 2025.

SIGA said the improvement reflected the Agency’s strengthened capacity to service short-term obligations from internally generated resources and indicated progress in debt management.

The Authority also noted that GNA maintained a debt-light financial structure, with no long-term financial obligations recorded during the period under review.

“The absence of long-term financial obligations is a particularly commendable feature of GNA’s financial structure, as it eliminates long-term debt-servicing risks and significantly reduces the Agency’s exposure to refinancing and interest rate risks over the medium to long term,” the report stated.

On governance compliance, the Agency was recognised for meeting key reporting obligations, including the submission of audited financial statements and other statutory requirements.

SIGA, however, noted that government subvention remained GNA’s primary source of income, accounting for more than 93 per cent of its total revenue in 2025.

The report encouraged management to intensify efforts to diversify its revenue streams and strengthen internally generated funds to reduce dependence on budgetary support.

Despite the challenge, SIGA acknowledged the progress made by the Agency in operational efficiency, debt management and financial reporting.

The findings form part of SIGA’s annual assessment of State-Owned Enterprises and other specified entities, aimed at promoting accountability, transparency and sound corporate governance in the public sector.
