Kiev/Moscow,Sept 28. (dpa/GNA) – Seven people have been killed and dozens wounded in fresh Russian strikes across Ukraine, with a scientific academy and a medical facility among buildings hit in Kiev, officials said on Monday.
Three people were killed in Russian attacks in the south-eastern city of Dnipro, military Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said on Telegram.
Another 15 people were injured in the strikes, Hanzha said. He also published images and videos showing a damaged building.
In the nearby city of Synelnykove, Russian strikes targeted a logistics centre, killing at least one person, Hanzha added. Another three people were injured, including a 15-year-old boy, who has been hospitalized and is in critical condition, the governor said.
Search efforts for potential further victims continue at the site, which has been engulfed in a major fire, Hanzha said.
In the eastern city of Kharkiv, 35 people were wounded, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said, after previously reporting that 29 were injured, including 10 minors, in a Russian strike using glide bombs on a residential building.
Kiev and its surrounding region were also targeted in a series of Russian attacks. One person was killed and six others injured, when the building of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in the historic centre of Kiev was struck and caught fire, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
A rescue operation was under way, with emergency crews searching for people who may still be inside the historic building, home to Ukraine’s leading state scientific research organization.
Zelensky released a video showing a large fire and extensive damage in and around the building. Ukrainian media published footage showing people on upper floors climbing onto window sills to escape the flames, as they waited to be rescued by firefighters.
A medical facility in the capital was also hit, Zelensky said, adding that emergency crews were working to extinguish a fire. There was initially no information on possible casualties.
The private Dobrobut clinic chain confirmed to Interfax-Ukraine, that one of its facilities had been struck. The building previously housed a branch of telecommunications company Ukrtelecom.
The headquarters of Ukrtelecom is also located directly next to the National Academy of Sciences building. Two more people were killed by Russian strikes in the Kiev region, including an Azerbaijani national, Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president also reported drone attacks and damage to residential buildings, telecommunications infrastructure and petrol stations in the capital.
A ship sailing under the flag of Palau was struck in the Odessa region, Zelensky said. Regional authorities reported two people wounded.
Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed strikes on data centres in Kiev, saying they provided the Ukrainian army with mobile phone and internet services.
A logistics centre and a ship transporting goods for the Ukrainian armed forces were attacked in the Odessa region, the Russian ministry said. Russia also struck data centres in Ukraine in the preceding days, prompting internet providers to report brief outages.
Meanwhile, Ukraine also launched fresh attacks on targets, deep inside Russia, with Zelensky reporting strikes on two defence plants in the Tula and Voronezh regions, on oil facilities in the Krasnodar region and on targets in the Black Sea region of Bryansk.
Tula Governor Dmitry Milyaev did not confirm the attacks or potential damage. Alexander Gusev, governor of Voronezh, said 20 Ukrainian drones had been repelled across the region, with four people, including three children, injured.
In Bryansk, which neighbours Ukraine, a bridge partly collapsed due to a Ukrainian attack, causing 10 carriages of a train to derail, acting Governor Yegor Kovalchuk said.
Elsewhere, 18 open goods wagons derailed, following an attack, he added.
