Akropong-Akuapem (E/R), Sept. 26, GNA – Government and traditional leaders have used the 200th anniversary of the Odwira Festival to call for unity, development and renewed efforts to secure the future of Akuapem.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey joined the people of Akuapem in reflecting on the significance of the festival and its place in the identity of the traditional area.
The Regional Minister, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, said Odwira had remained central to Akuapem’s cultural identity, reflecting the history, values and traditions that had sustained the people through generations.
According to her, the festival represented the historical and political journey of the people as well as the diversity that united them.
She noted that Odwira traditionally served as a period of cleansing, thanksgiving and remembrance of the ancestors whose sacrifices contributed to the survival of the traditional area.
The Minister, therefore, called for renewed commitment to unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
“Going forward, with the legacy of two centuries, we must ask ourselves this question: What does it mean to secure our future?” she asked.
She said securing the future required bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, exercising self-discipline, promoting communal spirit and applying leadership skills to address contemporary challenges.
Mrs Awatey commended the Okuapehene and traditional authorities for sustaining the Odwira Festival for 200 years and using it to promote peace, unity and development.
She noted that government had recognised Odwira as a major cultural and tourism event on Ghana’s national tourism calendar.
The Minister expressed the hope that the festival would continue to promote peace, harmony and development in Akuapem.
Mr Sammi Awuku, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, praised the Okuapehene and traditional authorities for using the festival to promote peace and harmony.
He also commended the Okuapehene for reinforcing the call for peaceful coexistence among people with differing views.
Mr Awuku said development thrived in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity and assured the traditional authorities of his continued cooperation to advance the development of Okuapemman.
Residents who attended the celebration welcomed the emphasis on peace, unity and development.
They said the messages delivered during the festival provided hope for the future and encouraged greater participation in the development of the traditional area.
The bicentennial celebration ended with renewed calls for the people of Akuapem to draw on their cultural heritage and work together towards a peaceful and prosperous future.
