Sunyani (Bono), Sept. 14, GNA – The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has presented 3,800 exercise books to some basic school children in the Bono Region as the 2026/2027 academic year begins.
According to Madam Patient Asare, the Bono Regional Representative of NALAG, the gesture was to lessen burdens of families and promote effective teaching and learning.
Speaking at a short ceremony in Sunyani, she noted many school children, particularly those in rural communities in the region, attended classes without basic learning materials like the exercise books.
That, Madam Asare added, affected their academic performance, saying that lack of exercise books had become a major barrier to improving quality education.
She said some pupils and students dropped out of school because their families could not afford to buy them learning materials.
“In extreme situations, some brilliant but needy pupils are forced to end their education abruptly due to the inability of their families to purchase exercise books and other educational essentials for them,” Mad Asare stated.
She explained that the NALAG led local governance and development and considered education a key part of community development and human resource empowerment.
Madam Asare indicated that the presentation formed part of the NALAG’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), saying that the association remained dedicated to complementing the government’s efforts at improving access to quality education.
She gave the assurance that the association would continue to collaborate with local assemblies and stakeholders and to implement interventions that directly impacted the lives of children and vulnerable people in the region.
Mr Joseph Addai Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister, who received the books, thanked the association for the gesture, saying that the exercise books were timely.
He noted that access to basic learning materials remained a major challenge for many children in rural communities in the region.
Mr Akwaboa emphasized that education remained the bedrock of development, adding that the support would greatly facilitate effective teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.
He called on the various Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and to ensure that the books were distributed fairly and to the deserving pupils and students.
Mr Akwaboa appealed to benevolent organisations, corporate institutions, and individuals to support the growth and development of education in rural communities in the region.
Mr Gabriel Antwi, the Bono Regional Director of Education, also commended NALAG for the initiative and expressed the hope that the association would continue with the gesture and to help promote quality education in the region.
He noted that the exercise books would motivate the school children to stay in schools and also study hard too.
