Effiakuma (W/R), Sept. 14, GNA – Mr Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effia, in the Western Region, has presented educational materials to support more than 600 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates who have gained admission into Senior High Schools (SHSs) within the constituency.
The items included metal trunks, mattresses, exercise books, and school bags, while the top ten best performing students in the BECE received additional cash prizes.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony at Effiakuma, Mr Boamah-Nyarko said the gesture was part of his resolve to support and nurture the dreams and aspirations of the young people as they made their first step into SHS.
He said the objective was to ensure that no child from Effia begun SHS feeling disadvantaged because their parents could not afford these basic items required to help them to successfully settle in their various schools.
“It is a demonstration of my believe that the future of Effia cannot be separated from the quality of education we provide for our children today, and I have decided that my office must not only be concerned about legislation and parliamentary debates, but also about the everyday realities and touch the lives of the people I represent,” the MP noted.
Mr Boamah-Nyarko said the donation formed part of a broader educational agenda being undertaken by his office with the overarching goal of investing in education to produce the scholars and technocrats needed to develop the Effia constituency.
He gave the assurance that he would continue to use the opportunities and resources available to support and invest in the education of young people to create the foundation to realise the Effia dream.
The MP, however, expressed worry over the dwindling academic performance of students in the area, and called for a concerted efforts among all stakeholders to develop pragmatic mechanisms to help reverse the trend.
He advised the beneficiaries to see the support given them as a motivation to take their SHS education seriously and avoid indulging in behaviours that could jeopardise their future.
Mrs Gloria Biney-Gontor, the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Director of Education, commended the MP for the kind gesture, and said the items would relief parents of their financial burdens while helping the BECE graduates to successfully transition to senior high education.
She also asked the students to take their studies seriously and avoid negative peer influence and activities that could disrupt their successful stay in school.
Some parents who spoke to the Ghana News Agency praised Mr Boamah-Nyarko for the intervention and said the support would enable them to use their limited resources on other items to adequately prepare their children for school.
