Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has called for a renewed sense of responsibility and commitment within the national team following Ghana’s disappointing 4-2 defeat to The Gambia.
The Black Stars suffered a painful setback at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday after relinquishing a two-goal advantage to lose 4-2, leaving supporters frustrated and raising fresh questions about the team’s progress.
Speaking after the match, Mensah acknowledged that Ghana had lessons to learn but maintained that the squad possesses the quality needed to recover from the defeat.
“There are a lot of things that need to change in the team,” he said. “Like the coach said, there is a whole lot to build together. We have a lot of good players and every player in the national team is good and talented.”
The defender stressed that representing Ghana demands more than footballing ability, urging players to recognize the responsibility that comes with wearing the national colours.
“At some point, it goes beyond talent. It goes beyond getting your call-up and picking your bag to come to Ghana,” he said. “To play for the national team, we need to put it in our minds that playing for Ghana comes with a lot of responsibility.”
Mensah noted that while the team cannot be faulted for a lack of talent, greater urgency, determination and fighting spirit are needed to compete successfully at the highest level.
“As for talent, as for running, as for playing football, everybody knows we can do it. But there is some urgency and some spirit we need to have when we play for Ghana,” he added.
Despite the defeat, the defender praised the attitude of his teammates, highlighting their commitment in both the match against The Gambia and the previous encounter with Côte d’Ivoire.
“I am proud of the boys. Nobody was hiding. Everybody showed that no matter the mistakes, they will show up for the national team, for their families, themselves, their communities and for their people,” he said.
Mensah expressed confidence that the team would learn from its mistakes and bounce back in the remaining qualifiers, with the aim of restoring the confidence of the Ghanaian public and securing positive results.
