Washington, Sept 21. (dpa/GNA) – Flights have been grounded at several airports on the US east coast, following a technical fault, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Monday.
The airports affected are JFK, Newark, LaGuardia and Westchester County in New York; Logan International Airport in Boston; Philadelphia International Airport; and Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.
Broadcaster NBC News reported that the travel plans of thousands of passengers have been affected. The FAA is dealing with a technical fault at the Terminal Radar Approach Control centre in Philadelphia. The centre controls approaches and departures, as well as the spacing between aircraft in the terminal’s airspace.
However, US Transport Secretary, Sean Duffy, later said air traffic is set to resume at LaGuardia in New York and in Philadelphia, while Newark, Westchester County and Teterboro remain affected.
The FAA has reported that there are no longer any flight suspensions at Boston and JFK airports, only delays. “An Amtrak construction crew accidentally cut into a fiber line in New Jersey, which caused a telecom outage and forced FAA to pause flights in the Northeast,” Duffy explained on X. “This incident underscores the need for additional funding, to modernize aging infrastructure and prevent disruptions like this in the future,” he added.
