Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – The Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service moved about 8,000 passengers from Adenta to Accra between 0600 and 0800 hours on the first day of a new contra-flow arrangement introduced to ease peak-hour congestion.
Mr Awudu Dawuda, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) Managing Director, said the intervention had significantly reduced travel time on the Adenta-Accra corridor, with buses completing the journey in about 23 minutes, compared with the usual two-and-a-half hours.
“We were able to take about 8,000 people around Adenta towards Accra,” he told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, ahead of the evening session on Tuesday, the first day of implementation.
Mr Dawuda said the service was expected to maintain similar travel times during the evening peak.
The contra-flow arrangement, which commenced on Tuesday, operates from 0600 to 0900 hours, and 1600 to 2000 hours on the Amasaman-Accra, Adenta-Accra and Kasoa-Accra corridors.
Under the arrangement, designated lanes are reserved exclusively for authorised Ayalolo buses, while private vehicles, taxis, trotros and other unauthorised vehicles are prohibited from using them.
Mr Dawuda indicated that the initiative was focused on moving people rather than buses, adding that it had also reduced passenger congestion at some bus stops.
“This is the first time that we are having this intervention as a traffic management principle in easing congestion in Greater Accra,” he said.
The GAPTE Managing Director urged commuters and motorists to embrace the arrangement as the authorities identified and addressed challenges to improve its operation.
