Prague, Sept 29. (dpa/GNA) – A 61-year-old woman has died, and two other people have been injured in a stabbing incident on Tuesday, in a school in Slovakia, the TASR news agency reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, a child in critical condition was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter, and a 44-year-old woman suffered stab wounds to her chest and was also flown to a hospital.
The incident took place at a primary and secondary school in the village of Staskov in the ÄŒadca district, around 185 kilometres north-east of Bratislava.
“The situation is under control and at this moment, there is no immediate danger to anyone,” police said.
Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok and Education Minister Tomáš Drucker, rushed to the scene.
According to media reports, the attacker was an eighth-grade student at the school and wielded a knife. There was initially no further information about the sequence of events, a possible motive, or the circumstances behind the attack.
Prime Minister Robert Fico, said he was deeply concerned about the attack. “Schools must be a safe place for our children, otherwise we will have no future,” he posted on Facebook.
Fico was himself critically injured in an assassination attempt in May 2024.
President Peter Pellegrini, expressed his condolences to the family of the dead woman.
He said such an incident was a warning to society as a whole, calling for more peace, respect, and mutual recognition.
