Volta Region to rigorously protect the environment, drive economic growth

By Caleb Kuleke, GNA

Ho, Aug. 19, GNA – Mr Felix Adom Boateng, the Volta Regional Economic Planning Officer (REPO), warned that the Regional Coordinating Council would spare no effort in protecting the region from illegal mining.

He stated that the Volta Region remained the only region in Ghana entirely unaffected by the devastating impacts of illegal mining, emphasising that strict measures would continue to sustain this status.

The Planning Officer explained that the regional capital’s identity as an “Oxygen City” thrived on its lush and green environment.

He commended traditional leaders for their vigilance, noting that local cultural values also inherently rejected illegal mining.

Mr Boateng made these remarks when the Namibia High Commissioner, Mrs Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu at his office in Ho.

The Planning Officer stated that the residents were continually urged to protect the forests, and that the culture of the people did not permit activities that destroy the land.

Beyond environmental conservation, Mr Boateng outlined plans for regional economic development that would provide jobs for the people and enhance their living standards.

He revealed that the region had approximately 27 medium-scale enterprises which were much prepared to take off in alignment with the Government’s 24- Hour Economy policy.

The Planning Officer noted that some of these enterprises required targeted investments and capital injections to optimise their operations, adding that steps would be taken to provide the necessary support.

Mr Boateng said the tourism sector was also set for a major boost with the upcoming West Africa Coastal Area Development Programme, which aimed to spark infrastructure development along the coast.

The Planning Officer explained that geographically, the region was divided into southern, middle, and northern ecological belts.

He noted that hosting Ghana’s highest mountain, tallest waterfall, and highest human settlement gave the Volta Region a distinct competitive edge in eco-tourism.

Combined with a booming hospitality sector and top-tier hotels, Mr Boateng said that Ho was rapidly cementing its reputation as the premier conference hub of the country.
