Barcelona, Aug 18. (dpa/GNA) – The Portuguese public prosecutor’s office, has opened an investigation into the tragic death of Welsh cycling talent, Finlay Tarling.
An autopsy of the body of the cyclist, who died in a collision with a vehicle on Friday during the Tour of Portugal, has been ordered by the court, the relevant authorities said.
Media reports said the 19-year-old Welshman was hit by a vehicle not involved in the race on the eighth stage from Melgaço to Fafe. The investigation is intended, among other things, to clarify how the vehicle was able to enter the race route.
The driver of the vehicle initially waited on the main road and let the main group of cyclists go through, a police spokesman told the Portuguese broadcaster RTP. When no further riders showed up, he asked nearby spectators if the track was clear.
Since the spectators apparently assumed by mistake that no more riders would be coming, the man turned made his way onto the race course, where he collided with Tarling a short time later. His alcohol and drug test was negative.
