Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – The University of Ghana (UG) has clarified that students admitted to the African University College of Communications (AUCC), during the 2022/2023 academic year who satisfy all academic requirements, shall be eligible for certificates issued under the seal of the University.
The African AUCC, now the African University of Communication and Business (AUCB), which then had an affiliated arrangement with the UG, during the 2022/2023 academic year admitted students who satisfied all its academic requirements to pursue its programmes.
The explanation on the UG’s position was contained in a response to a petition submitted by affected Level 400 students over the processing and issuance of their degree certificates.
In a letter signed by Professor Gordon A. Awandare, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, stated that students admitted to AUCC under the affiliation arrangement, remained governed by the terms and conditions of that affiliation arrangement for the duration of their programme of study.
It further stressed that “students admitted during the 2022/2023 academic year who satisfy all academic requirements “shall be eligible for the award of certificates issued under the seal of the University of Ghana.”
The affected students have since the announcement welcomed the university’s response, saying it reinforced their position that they remain entitled to certification under the UG affiliation framework.
They said their admission, academic records, examination arrangements and other institutional representations, were all made under the affiliation arrangement with the University of Ghana.
The students said that their demand was therefore not merely about the name appearing on their certificates, but they were concerned about their legitimate expectations, academic rights and the terms under which they accepted admission into the institution.
They argued that substituting University of Ghana certificates with AUCB degrees for students admitted under the affiliation arrangement, would amount to a departure from the framework under which they enrolled and pursued their programmes.
The students maintained that their demand was not for a special concession but for the fulfilment of the commitments made to them throughout their academic journey.
The students had urged their course mates to remain calm and united as they await the final communication from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) following their petition.
They cautioned students against what they described as misinformation and attempts to misrepresent the circumstances surrounding the award of the Certificate being disputed.
“We encourage all affected students to remain focused and not fall for misleading narratives. We are pursuing the matter through the appropriate channels and remain committed to ensuring that our legitimate academic rights are protected,” the students said.
