Aflao (V/R), Aug. 11, GNA — Torgbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, the Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, has urged the youth to desist from drug abuse and other harmful practices that could undermine their health, education and future prospects.
He expressed concern about the increasing involvement of some young people in the use of illicit drugs, saying the situation required intensified public education, counselling and community support.
Torgbui Fiti made the call at the DJ Benner’s five-year anniversary celebration in Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
He said many young people who completed second-cycle institutions aspired to join the security services, but some were unaware that applicants were subjected to medical examinations, including tests for drug use, during the recruitment process.
The Paramount Chief said some young people who had recently received assistance to pursue opportunities in the security services were reportedly disqualified after drug tests detected substances in their systems.
He described the situation as worrying and said it was necessary for parents, traditional leaders, schools, health professionals and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to prevent drug abuse among the youth.
Torgbui Fiti said the Aflao Traditional Council was prepared to support young people who remained committed to living drug-free lives and pursuing productive careers.
He added that the Council was also engaging health professionals to support individuals who wished to overcome drug dependence but were unable to do so on their own.
The Paramount Chief urged parents not to abandon children struggling with substance use but rather seek appropriate professional assistance for them.
He said there was hope for individuals battling drug abuse and encouraged families to prioritise the wellbeing of their children through guidance, counselling and early intervention.
Torgbui Fiti further appealed to the youth to focus their energies on education, skills training, employment and other productive activities that could contribute to their personal development and the progress of the community.
