Pakistan’s ex-PM Khan back in prison after brief hospital visit

Islamabad, Aug 21. (dpa/GNA) – Pakistan’s former prime minister, Imran Khan, was taken back to his prison cell after a brief medical check-up on Friday, in defiance of a court order to move him to a hospital.

Khan, 73, was brought to a government hospital overnight, following an order by the Supreme Court this week to move the ailing leader to a hospital, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on X.

A team of doctors conducted the medical examination of the popular leader and found him fit, Tarar said. Khan’s Tehreek-i-Insaaf political party has not yet commented on the development.

The court order comes after Khan’s party and family said, the former premier had lost a vision in one eye and was also suffering from high blood pressure caused by severe anxiety.

Khan, who ruled Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, has been in prison for more than three years, following his conviction on multiple graft charges.

His party said charges against him are politically motivated. A former sport celebrity, Khan was removed through a vote of confidence by Pakistan’s parliament in 2022, after falling out with the powerful military.
