Obuasi (Ash), Aug. 8, GNA – The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has procured two 200KVA/33KV transformers at a cost of GH¢250,000, to restore stable electricity supply to Kwabenakwa and Asonkore communities.
The intervention follows nearly six months of persistent power instability in the two communities, which has affected households, schools, and businesses.
Mr William Kofi Adzowu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), handed over the transformers to the communities at a ceremony, explaining that the Assembly decided to procure the equipment after the required transformers became temporarily unavailable at the Ministry of Energy.
He said the Assembly considered the prolonged power challenges a major concern and therefore intervened to ensure that the residents did not continue to suffer unnecessarily.
Mr Adzowu apologised to residents for the difficulties caused by the prolonged power outages and assured them of the Assembly’s commitment to addressing challenges affecting their livelihoods and development.
“I am here to serve the good people of Obuasi East, and it is my primary responsibility to ensure that our citizens receive the reliable services they deserve,” he said.
He urged residents to protect the transformers, desist from illegal connections and report faults promptly to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to help prolong the lifespan of the equipment.
Nana Akwasi Addo, the Abusuapayin of Kwabenakwa Subinso, expressed appreciation to the MCE and the Assembly for the intervention.
He said the prolonged power instability had negatively affected small businesses in the community, with some operators losing substantial portions of their trading capital.
Mr Charles Abu, the Assembly Member for the Kwabenakwa Electoral Area, commended the MCE for the swift intervention, describing the procurement of the transformers as an important step towards restoring normal economic activities in the communities.
Technical teams from the ECG are expected to complete the installation of the transformers to facilitate the restoration of stable electricity supply to the two communities.
