NPP Volta to prioritise presidential campaign ahead of 2028 elections

Ho (V/R), Aug 17, GNA – Mr Makafui Kofi Woanyah, the re-elected Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the party will prioritise the presidential campaign ahead of the 2028 general election.

The focus on the campaign is part of efforts to improve the party’s electoral performance in the region.

Mr Woanyah, who was speaking after his re-election in Ho on Saturday, said aside the campaign, the party would also strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and mobilise voters across the region.

Mr Woanyah said the decision was informed by the need to increase the NPP’s presidential votes, which contributed directly to the party’s national presidential tally, while parliamentary results were determined on a constituency-by-constituency basis.

Mr Woanyah said the regional executives would therefore place greater emphasis on the presidential campaign, with constituency executives taking full responsibility for coordinating the campaign at the grassroots level under the supervision of the regional leadership.

He said parliamentary aspirants and candidates would also be expected to pursue their individual campaigns, while the party’s broader presidential campaign would be coordinated through the regional, constituency, electoral area and polling station structures.

He expressed confidence that the NPP could make significant gains in the Volta Region, saying the political fortunes of the party could change as voters assessed the performance of the government.

He cited persistent power challenges, popularly referred to as “dumsor,” as one of the issues he believed could influence voters’ decisions in the next election.

Mr Woanyah said the NPP would work to convince voters that returning the party to power was necessary to address their economic and social concerns.

He, however, acknowledged that the 2028 elections could be challenging at the national level, saying the outcome of the Volta Regional elections demonstrated that party members were increasingly demanding credible and formidable people in leadership positions.

He said the development could result in surprises in the selection and retention of party leaders as the NPP prepared for the next national elections.

Mr Woanyah said the new regional leadership would, therefore, focus on building a stronger, united and more effective party organisation capable of responding to the expectations of its members and voters.

He said the party would also use lessons from the regional elections to strengthen its structures and improve its chances of winning more votes in the 2028 general election.
