Tema, Aug. 16, GNA — Some members and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema Central Constituency have rejected the purported outcome of the constituency’s election held on August 13, 2026, and called for the results to be annulled.
They cited a pending court case, an unresolved internal party dispute and what they described as inadequate and unofficial notice of the election as grounds for their rejection.
In a statement signed by Mr Prince Anim-Nuamah, a constituency secretary aspirant said a court action challenging, among other issues, the validity of the album/register to be used for the election remained pending.
They said the case, which was initially scheduled for hearing on August 26, was brought forward and heard on August 11, but was subsequently adjourned to August 19, 2026.
The stakeholders said they had therefore expected all parties to await the court’s determination before proceeding with the election.
They also said the party’s National Elections Committee had initiated an internal dispute-resolution process and constituted a three-member committee to engage the interested parties and seek an amicable resolution.
The statement said the committee had not as of August 13, issued a report, determination or further communication to the parties.
The stakeholders said the election was also communicated to them at short notice.
They claimed that at about 17:00 hours on August 11, a WhatsApp message from the secretary of the Constituency Election Committee informed them that an election would be held the following morning.
They said they subsequently requested official communication from the appropriate authority confirming the decision and the basis for the election, but no satisfactory clarification was provided.
“Under these circumstances, it was practically impossible for us to adequately prepare our people and participate meaningfully in an election whose notice, arrangements and authority remained unclear,” the statement said.
The group said its inability to participate should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the election or acceptance of its outcome.
It expressed concern that the process could not be considered a legitimate reflection of the will of the entire constituency when, according to them, one side of an ongoing dispute was unable to participate because of the short notice and unresolved questions surrounding the authority for the election.
The stakeholders also raised concerns about individuals who allegedly conducted and supervised the election, saying their mandate and authority had not been sufficiently communicated to all stakeholders.
They therefore called on the NPP hierarchy to reject and set aside the purported results until the outstanding legal and internal party matters had been resolved.
They urged the party leadership to allow the court proceedings to take their course, particularly the matter adjourned to August 19, and allow the three-member committee appointed by the National Elections Committee to complete its work and communicate its findings.
They further called for any subsequent election to be conducted only after the legal and internal party issues had been resolved, with adequate and formal notice given to all stakeholders.
They also demanded that any future election be transparent, inclusive, credible and acceptable to all parties.
The stakeholders stressed that they were not opposed to elections but objected to what they described as an electoral process conducted while serious legal and internal party issues remained unresolved.
They appealed to the NPP’s national and regional leadership and the National Elections Committee to intervene urgently to prevent the situation from escalating.
They also called on supporters and stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding while the matter was pursued through the appropriate legal and institutional channels.
