Sege, Aug. 20, GNA – Flood victims at Luhuor and Nuhalenya in the Ada East District have received a total of 870 bags of cement to support the reconstruction of homes damaged by the June 29 flooding.
The donation was made through a collaborative intervention involving Mr Daniel Keshi Bessey, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sege Constituency, the District Chief Executive (DCE), and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The intervention is intended to provide affected households with practical support to begin rebuilding their homes following the devastating floods.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, GNA, Mr Bessey explained that he was outside the country when the flooding occurred on June 29, having travelled to the United States on a parliamentary assignment.
He said the trip was also connected to his role as a board member of the Ghana Football Association.
Despite being away, the MP said he remained in constant contact with the DCE, the District NADMO Director and leaders of the affected communities, to monitor the situation and assess the needs of residents.
Mr Bessey has since visited the affected communities and joined efforts to support victims of the disaster, stating that the decision to donate cement, rather than conventional relief items such as rice and mattresses, was deliberate.
According to him, the cement would provide a more practical form of assistance by enabling affected residents to begin repairing and rebuilding their damaged homes.
Nene Narh Alipoe V, Chief of Luhuor, expressed gratitude to the MP for what he described as a surprise and unprecedented gesture.
Nene Alipoe said the community had not witnessed such support since its establishment, particularly the donation of building materials directly to flood victims.
He urged community members to appreciate the intervention, stressing that the donation was not intended to completely rebuild houses destroyed by the floods but to provide victims with the necessary support to commence the rebuilding process.
Mr Modjifa Tanihu Jerry John Foreigner Mills-Nkrumah, DCE for Ada East, also dismissed claims that he was shielding the MP from criticism, saying Mr Bessey had demonstrated a strong commitment to his constituents through the intervention.
He described the donation as a clear demonstration of the MP’s concern for the people of Luhuor and Nuhalenya and assured residents that further support and development initiatives would be pursued.
Mr Eric Doku Abayateye, NADMO Director, appealed to residents to act responsibly during the distribution of relief items following the flooding.
He urged people who were not directly affected by the disaster not to insist on receiving items meant for victims.
Mr Abayateye said ensuring fairness and transparency in the distribution of relief items would enable genuinely affected households to receive adequate support to rebuild their lives and homes.
Mr Jonathan Tetteh Asamanyua, Assembly Member for the area, expressed appreciation to the MP and the DCE for supporting flood victims.
He described the donation as the first of its kind in the community and commended the authorities for responding to the immediate needs of residents at a difficult time.
Mr Asamanyua, however, appealed to the MP and other stakeholders to consider the deplorable condition of the Hwakpo–Luhuor and Hwakpo–Nuhalenya roads.
He said the construction and upgrading of the roads would improve transportation and connectivity between the communities and boost economic activities.
The intervention has been welcomed by community leaders and residents, who expressed hope that the support would enable affected households to begin rebuilding while drawing attention to other pressing challenges, particularly the poor road network linking the communities.
