Accra, Aug. 3, GNA – Morocco has named the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway the “Donald J. Trump Highway” in recognition of the close ties between King Mohammed VI and United States President Donald Trump, as well as the longstanding strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States.
The decision was communicated by King Mohammed VI in a letter to President Trump dated July 2, 2026.
According to the Moroccan monarch, relations between Rabat and Washington, historically founded on friendship and mutual loyalty, had become particularly dynamic and productive during President Trump’s two terms in office.
King Mohammed VI highlighted the United States’ 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, describing it as a landmark decision that remained deeply significant to Moroccans and had strengthened bilateral relations between the two countries.
As a gesture of appreciation, the King said he had decided to name one of Morocco’s most important road infrastructure projects after the US President.
The Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway stretches approximately 1,055 kilometres and links northern and southern Morocco. It is regarded as a strategic transport corridor connecting Europe and Africa.
The King said the highway contributed to strengthening territorial connectivity across Morocco in the same way that President Trump’s leadership had helped bring the two countries closer together.
President Trump welcomed the honour in a message posted on his Truth Social platform on July 26.
“Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco – Such a Great Honor!” he wrote, adding that he hoped to travel the full length of the highway in the future.
The expressway was constructed to international standards under the development model for Morocco’s southern provinces launched by King Mohammed VI during the 40th anniversary commemoration of the Green March.
The road links Tiznit and Dakhla through key cities including Guelmim and Laayoune and is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel times, and minimise traffic disruptions caused by flooding and sand accumulation.
Authorities say the project will facilitate the movement of people and goods between Morocco’s southern provinces and the country’s major economic centres.
Beyond its domestic importance, the expressway forms part of Morocco’s Atlantic corridor strategy and supports the Kingdom’s vision of promoting development, cooperation and shared prosperity along the Atlantic coast with African partners.
The project is also expected to enhance trade and economic integration in West Africa while reinforcing Morocco’s role as a logistics gateway between Europe and Africa.
Observers say the naming of the highway underscores the strength of Morocco-US relations and reflects continued cooperation between the two countries on strategic, economic and diplomatic issues.
President Trump, in a message marking Morocco’s Throne Day, referred to the enduring friendship between the United States and Morocco, describing the relationship as one based on trust and mutual respect.
He also reiterated Washington’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the basis for a lasting resolution of the dispute.
