Aflao (V/R), Aug. 24, GNA – Three hundred candidates who participated in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Ketu South Municipality are to benefit from an educational support initiative by Felix Akonta Akakpo, Youth and Development Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area.
The beneficiaries, selected from public and private basic schools across the municipality, will receive mattresses, trunks, chop boxes and other essential educational materials to support their transition to Senior High School (SHS).
Mr Akakpo, also known as Torgbui Tenuvi II, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the beneficiaries were selected through an equitable process across the municipality.
He said the initiative was aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and guardians while complementing the Government’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
The support, which will be provided in both cash and kind, represents an increase from the 50 students supported by Torgbui Tenuvi in 2025.
“I wish to assure parents and guardians of the selected beneficiaries not to purchase the listed items, as I am committed to alleviating the financial burden associated with their wards’ transition to SHS,” he said.
Mr Akakpo congratulated the nearly 5,000 candidates who participated in the 2026 BECE and commended those who distinguished themselves through excellent performances.
He said it was unfortunate for brilliant students to complete their basic education but struggle to continue because of financial constraints, adding that the intervention was intended to help address such challenges.
He expressed the hope that the initiative would motivate students preparing to enter JHS 3, as well as future BECE candidates, to take their education seriously.
The Youth and Development Chief said human capital development remained critical to the progress of every society and pledged to complement government efforts through educational infrastructure development initiatives within the Aflao Traditional Area.
He said, in collaboration with the Ketu South Municipal Education Directorate, a date would be announced in September 2026 to formally celebrate and honour the beneficiaries before they departed for their respective SHSs.
Mr Akakpo said he would continue to monitor the academic progress of the beneficiaries to ensure that the support achieved its intended purpose.
He appealed to parents and guardians of the selected students to submit their wards’ first-choice SHSs to their respective school heads by close of work on Tuesday, August 26, 2026.
