Akoon (W/R), Aug. 19, GNA – Health Gold Fields Ghana Limited has emerged winners of the 2026 Zone One Inter-Mine First Aid and Safety Competition.
The Health Gold Fields Community Team scored 98 per cent to beat Gold Fields Ghana Tarkwa Mine, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Asante Gold, and Ghana Manganese Company.
Each member of the winning team received a 65-inch Samsung television.
Mr Elliot Twum, the Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Gold Fields Ghana Limited, and host of the event, said “Safety First and Always” was a call to action for all players in the industry.
He noted that the competition, initiated in 1977, showcased to the public how seriously mining companies take safety measures critical to their operations.
Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology, said the university would from next academic year introduce a programme in Safety, to meet industry needs.
He urged the companies to continue to strengthen safety culture to save families from avoidable pain and grief.
Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, said safety was key and defined every operation.
He stated that accidents were not just numbers but represented families affected by fatalities and reiterated the need to see both contract and staff workers as “the real gold that must be keenly protected.”
Dr Catherine Kuupol-Kuutor, the Manager of Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine, said the company would continue to advance its care for staff and communities.
