Accra, Aug. 31, GNA – The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), through its Wheelchair Tennis Committee, has organised a national training camp for junior wheelchair tennis players at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court.
The training camp brought together a new group of beginner players aged between eight and 14 years from Accra, Ho, Cape Coast and Koforidua.
Young female wheelchair tennis players accounted for about 45 per cent of participants, reflecting efforts to increase female participation in the sport.
The young players attended the camp with their local coaches, who worked alongside national coaches to provide training and introduce them to the fundamentals of the sport.
Some of Ghana’s leading wheelchair tennis players, including Maclean Dzidzienyo, Bernard Yawson, Bridget Nartey, Stacy Konadu Mensah and Daniel Laryea, participated in the programme by demonstrating skills and sharing their experiences with the juniors.
Participants at the tennis camp would be formally registered and would be integrated into a structured development pathway designed to support their progression in wheelchair tennis.
The initiative seeks to produce future elite athletes by building on the success of players such as Emmanuel Amobire and Henry Adjapong, who advanced from the junior ranks to become senior national players.
Mr Isaac Duah, President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, and Vice President Cedric Dzelu attended the event and reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to developing wheelchair tennis across the country.
Mr Henry Larbi, National Coordinator for Wheelchair Tennis, commended the International Tennis Federation’s World Tennis programme for its continued support of wheelchair tennis development in Ghana since 2013.
“We believe we will get junior players who can represent Ghana internationally from 2027,” Mr Larbi said.
He said sustained collaboration between international partners and the Ghana Tennis Federation had contributed significantly to the growth of wheelchair tennis and the expansion of opportunities for young athletes with disabilities.
