European farmers tap winter feed stocks as drought scorches pastures – Reports

Moscow, Aug 13 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – European farmers have been using winter forage stocks to feed their herds after severe drought devastated pastures and crops, Euractiv news website reported on Thursday.

Farmers are trying to address the problem in various ways, including by dipping into winter feed supplies, reducing herd sizes and looking for alternative feed. In some cases, governments have been easing agricultural regulations, Euractiv reported.

Europe is experiencing one of the most intense heat waves in recent years, with Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece suffering the most. Official data shows that about 38% of the European Union’s territory has been affected by drought this summer.
