Mexico City,July 12, (dpa/GNA) – Venezuelan authorities are to set up temporary housing to shelter families, who lost their homes in the devastating earthquakes that struck the country last month, Parliament President Jorge Rodríguez said on Saturday.

Two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 shook Venezuela on June 24. More than 1,000 significantly weaker aftershocks have followed.

At least 4,333 people have been confirmed dead so far. Over 850 buildings lie in ruins or have been severely damaged, especially in La Guaira, a coastal city near Caracas.

Almost 18,000 people have lost their homes in the quakes, with many currently being housed in schools, which will have to be vacated in September when the new school year begins, Rodríguez, the brother of acting President Delcy Rodríguez, said during a press conference.
