Spintex, July 10, GNA — The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has stepped up the enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations, warning residents and business operators against activities that undermine efforts to keep the municipality clean.
Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), gave the warning after leading a cleanup exercise across parts of the municipality as part of the national sanitation campaign.
The clean-up exercise, which began at about 0600 hours, covered areas including the Motorway Roundabout, Sakumono Estate Junction, Community Two, Community Five, the Spintex Road and Sakumono Village.
Mr Totimeh said the assembly received support from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, as well as residents who participated in the exercise.
He said some residents attempted to avoid participating by remaining inside their kiosks during the exercise but were identified following information from members of the community and warned to comply with future communal labour activities.
The MCE cautioned business owners against operating during officially designated communal labour hours, stating that the assembly would enforce the directive and sanction offenders.
He also disclosed that a number of kiosks had been erected on drainage channels, obstructing the free flow of water, adding that the assembly had marked such structures for removal as part of measures to improve drainage and reduce flooding within the municipality.
He commended residents and the security agencies for supporting the exercise and urged the public to make environmental cleanliness a continuous responsibility rather than an occasional activity.
