Trump pays E Jean Carroll $5.6m, three years after sex assault verdict

New York, July 14, (dpa/GNA) – Three years after a court ruled that Donald Trump had sexually assaulted and defamed US author, E Jean Carroll, in 1996, the then real estate tycoon-turned US president, on Tuesday paid her the multimillion-dollar compensation awarded by the court.

Carroll received around $5.6 million, according to court documents and her lawyer. This consists of the $5 million compensation award Trump was ordered to pay in 2023, plus the interest that has accrued since then.

In 2023, a New York jury found that Trump had attacked the US author in 1996, at an upscale department store in New York, sexually abused her, and later defamed her. He was ordered to pay damages of $5 million. Trump has always denied the allegations.

The claims were time-barred under criminal law, but the civil legal route remained open. Trump had previously failed in several attempts to challenge the verdict and stop the pay out.

However, because the US Supreme Court has not yet had the final word, the 82-year-old Carroll will initially invest the money, her lawyer said.

A Supreme Court decision is also still pending in another ruling that awarded Carroll $83 million from Trump.
