Trump condemns communism in storm-delayed US 250th speech

Washington, July 5 (dpa/GNA) – US President, Donald Trump, marked the 250th anniversary of the United States with a warning against communist ideology.

Taking to the stage in Washington after a delay due to severe weather, Trump condemned “communists” while documenting his achievements in office. “Communism is a loser, and it always will be. The communist system is the opposite of the American system, and the communist system has never worked,” he said. “We like to stop a threat like that immediately, and before it begins. It’s like a cancer, you got to cut it out, and you got to cut it out fast.”

Trump has increasingly used the term “communism” in recent times to attack left-wing domestic opponents and their positions.

Amidst tributes to veterans, Trump repeatedly switched to campaign mode, promoting his long-sought “Save America Act.” The legislation would require US voters to prove their citizenship when registering to vote, and present a photo ID in federal elections.

He also spoke of his efforts to protect the second amendment to the US Constitution, the right to bear arms and of US military operations in Venezuela and Iran. “America is a nation of winners and today our country is winning again,” he said.

Trump’s speech was delayed several hours after severe weather forced the temporary evacuation of the National Mall. Thousands of people were asked to leave the event and seek shelter in nearby museums, government departments and other public buildings. “Lightning will never stop you,” he told the crowd as he ended the 40-minute speech.

Hundreds of rockets then lit up the sky above the US capital. According to the organizers, it was supposed to be the largest fireworks display in history with 850,000 fireworks to be launched.

Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the US Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the 13 American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
