Zelensky congratulates Trump to mark US Independence Day

Kiev, July 5, (dpa/GNA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has congratulated President Donald Trump on Independence Day in the United States.

“We’ve had a very good phone call,” Zelensky said in a post on X late on Saturday. “We are grateful to the United States for all the assistance we have received, from Javelins and Patriots to political support, and we deeply value that America stands by us in defending our independence,” Zelensky said in reference to air-defence missiles received from the US.

He added that he and Trump had discussed the current situation on the frontline as will as diplomatic efforts. “There is a real prospect to put an end to this war, and America’s resolve is decisive. We have agreed to continue these discussions during the NATO Summit in Ankara,” Zelensky said.

NATO leaders meet in the Turkish capital on Tuesday and Wednesday. There was no statement from the White House on the phone call, even hours later, breaking with usual practice.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also phoned Trump. The conversation had been “business like and constructive,” Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said, according to the official TASS news agency.

Apart from the war in Ukraine, the two leaders also discussed the US conflict with Iran, he said. Trump had once again offered to mediate in the Ukraine war with a view to achieving a durable peace, Ushakov said.

The foreign policy adviser said Putin had renewed his invitation to Trump to visit Russia.
