Tema, July 02, GNA- Some residents of Tema have called for stricter enforcement of planning regulations and environmental sanitation by-laws to address the recurring flooding that continues to affect parts of the Greater Accra region during the rainy season.
The calls follow the heavy rains on June 29, 2026, that caused flooding in several communities, resulting in damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.
Mr Abibeo Amoaku, a resident affected by the floods at Community 18, said the government should prioritise long-term flood mitigation measures instead of relying mainly on emergency relief after disasters.
He urged authorities to enforce zoning regulations to prevent construction on waterways and other flood-prone areas.
Mr Mawulolo Amevo, an affected resident at Tema Community Three, called for stricter sanctions against developers and individuals who illegally build on natural drainage channels.
He said enforcing existing planning regulations would help reduce the financial losses and destruction caused by annual floods.
Madam Agatha Asoo, affected resident of Tema Community One, appealed to the authorities to undertake regular dredging of major drains and desilt gutters in flood-prone communities before the peak rainy season.
She also called for the strict enforcement of sanitation by-laws to discourage the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains, which she said contributed significantly to flooding.
Mr Steven Tei, a businessman, urged residents to support community clean-up exercises and maintain good sanitation practices to complement government efforts.
He said preventing floods required shared responsibility between public authorities and citizens.
