Agbozume (V/R), July 20, GNA — Mr David Sitsope Tamekloe, the Editor-in-Chief of Whatsup News and the President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), has supported flood victims at Agbozume-Ahorkpoe in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The donation, carried out through the Ketu South Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), formed part of efforts to alleviate the hardship faced by residents affected by the recent floods.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Tamekloe said the intervention was made possible through contributions from individuals and partners, including Mrs Veronica Debrah, wife of the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, and other benevolent supporters.
He explained that the gesture was intended to reduce the burden on affected families whose homes and livelihoods had been disrupted by the floods.
Mr Tamekloe assured victims in other communities of his commitment to extend similar support and urged residents to adopt responsible environmental practices to help prevent future flooding.
He cautioned against building on waterways and the indiscriminate dumping of waste, which often blocked drains and worsened flooding.
He also encouraged community members to engage in communal labour to keep their surroundings clean.
He noted that beyond displacement, flooding could also lead to disease outbreaks if sanitation was not prioritised.
Mr Ferguson Ahorlu, Ketu South Municipal Director of NADMO, expressed appreciation to Mr Tamekloe and his partners for the timely intervention.
He said Agbozume-Ahorkpoe was selected due to the extent of damage recorded, describing it as one of the hardest-hit communities in the municipality.
Mr Ahorlu also appealed to residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to consider relocating to safer grounds during the rainy season to safeguard lives and property.
He disclosed that NADMO had begun distributing relief items received for flood victims across the municipality and assured that efforts were being made to reach all affected households.
“Though the items may not fully replace what has been lost, they will help ease the burden on victims,” he said.
Receiving the items on behalf of beneficiaries, Mr Saviour Agbeko Awoye, the Assembly Member for the Ahorkpoe Electoral Area, expressed gratitude to the donors and assured that the items would be distributed fairly.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to GNA described the support as timely and expressed appreciation to the donors.
Items donated included 30 boxes of Klensoft and bar soap, 30 boxes of Athena bath soap, 30 sacks of powdered soap, 30 boxes of sanitary pads, 10 large packs of toilet rolls, four large packs of table tissue, 20 bags of rice, 10 boxes of cooking oil, 20 boxes of noodles, assorted packs of sachet water, and 30 packs of soft drinks.
