Accra, July 17, GNA – The KOICA Alumni Association of Ghana (KAAG) has urged students in senior high schools to support recycling and environmental protection efforts to mitigate climate effects and safeguard lives and property.
Mr Donghyun Lee, Country Director, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), made the call at an Environmental Awareness and Recycling Outreach Programme held Thursday at the Accra Academy Senior High School.
Members of KAAG led the initiative to deepen individual action and responsibility towards environmental conservation.
Mr Lee noted that preservation efforts and campaigns in schools and communities could lead to significant changes as other stakeholders contributed to making the planet safer for future generations.
He cautioned against activities that polluted the environment and urged the students to act as change agents within the school environment and beyond.
“Climate change poses a huge problem worldwide…protecting the environment starts with simple choices; how we dispose waste, how we recycle, and how we keep our environment clean,” he said.
“The things you learn today will stay with you for life…never underestimate school lectures; the knowledge acquired today could change everything.”
Mr Lee commended the school authorities for the partnership, emphasising KOICA’s commitment to supporting developmental efforts in priority areas.
Ms Josephine Esi Kpesese, Vice President, KAAG, said the outreach formed part of the Association’s social responsibility, and sought to rally students to help tackle environmental challenges.
She said proper waste disposal, recycling, reducing the impact of flood and related activities, could ensure cities were more resilient to natural occurrences.
She urged citizens to act responsibly and join other social causes to help protect the environment while the Association embarked on other community projects.
Mr Eric Ebo Sey, the Headmaster, Accra Academy, commended KAAG for the initiative, urging students to educate their peers and apply the knowledge acquired.
The interactive session included quizzes, presentations on promoting recycling and environmental responsibility, and a demonstration on turning used clothing into tote bag (handbag).
