Keta (V/R), July 1, GNA-The Keta Municipal Disaster Management Committee has conducted a comprehensive flood impact assessment across several communities within the municipality, which revealed extensive damages to homes, schools, markets, roads, bridges, farms, and critical public infrastructure caused by the recent flooding.
The assessment, undertaken on Tuesday, 30th June 2026, was led by Mr Wonder Setsoafia Deynu, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Director of the Keta Municipal Assembly, who coordinated the multisectoral team that fanned out across the most affected communities to evaluate the full scale of the disaster.
Mr Deynu, said the assessment team was made up of representatives from the National Fire Service, National Ambulance Service, Public Health, Environmental Health and Sanitation, Education Directorate, Department of Agriculture, Information Services Department, and community opinion leaders, which reflected the broad-based and coordinated nature of the municipal response.
“The communities we visited during the assessment include the Laworshime Electoral Area, Anyako, Konu, Anlo Afiadenyigba, Horvi-Havedzi, Kedzikope, Eduxorgbor, and Abutiakope, all of which recorded varying degrees of flood damage that have significantly disrupted the lives of residents,” he said.
He explained that the assessment revealed that the flooding has caused extensive damage to homes, schools, markets, roads, bridges, farms, churches, cemeteries, public and private toilet facilities, refuse dumping sites, and other critical infrastructure across the visited communities.
He stated that beyond physical damages, the flooding has severely disrupted livelihoods, education, transportation, sanitation, and economic activities in many of the affected communities, while residents urgently requiring relief support and rehabilitation of destroyed infrastructure.
“As part of the coordinated emergency response effort, the Volta Regional NADMO Director, Mr Pascal Agbagba, together with the Information Services Department and under the leadership of the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, visited Kedzi, where they received a situational briefing from the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Wisdom Seade, on the extent of the flooding across the municipality.”
Mr Setsoafia announced that, according to the MCE, community engagement and public education programmes would be conducted from July 3 to 6, in Anlo Afiadenyigba, Anyako, Atiavi, Horvi-Havedzi, and other affected communities to educate residents on recommendations from engineers and technical experts aimed at mitigating flood risks and improving community resilience.
Mr Deynu said a comprehensive assessment report, together with recommendations and proposed mitigation measures, would be submitted to the Keta Municipal Assembly Management and the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC) to facilitate urgent interventions and the development of long-term flood management strategies for the municipality.
The Keta Municipal Disaster Management Committee has expressed sincere appreciation to the Volta Regional Minister, the Regional NADMO Team, the Member of Parliament, the Municipal Chief Executive, all participating institutions, and community leaders for their swift response and unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents in the affected communities.
The Committee also extended its heartfelt gratitude to Mr Francis Senanu Dekutse for his generous donation of GHC 500 in support of the assessment exercise and described the gesture as a demonstration of the kind of community solidarity needed to effectively respond to the disaster.
Mr Deynu, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, assured the public that NADMO and its stakeholder institutions remain firmly committed to disaster preparedness, flood risk reduction, emergency response, and the protection of lives and property across the Keta Municipality.
He encouraged residents to cooperate fully with officials during the upcoming community engagement programmes scheduled between June 3 and 6th, for the sessions to provide vital information to help communities better understand and respond to the flood risks they face.
The NADMO Director urged all residents in flood-affected communities to continue observing all safety precautions and to remain vigilant as efforts are intensified to address the flood situation and restore normalcy to the lives of those displaced or affected by the recent devastating floods.
