Jomoro residents decry deplorable road network, urge Deputy Transport Minister to act

Half-Assini (WR), July 15, GNA – Residents of the Jomoro Municipality have appealed to Madam Dorcas Afo-Toffey, Deputy Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, to use her office to address the deplorable road network in the area.

They said the poor state of roads in the municipality was affecting the social, health and economic well-being of commuters and passengers.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mrs Aisha Davies, a resident of Jomoro, expressed concern over the condition of the Samenye-Barrier to Half-Assini and New Town road.

She said the bad nature of the road had led to the loss of lives through accidents as drivers swerved to avoid deep potholes.

According to her, although Madam Afo-Toffey had on several occasions promised to fix the roads, there had been no visible improvement even ahead of any planned asphaltic overlay.

“A whole municipality like Jomoro has been turned into a cottage because of bad and inaccessible roads,” she lamented.

Madam Khadija Yankey, another resident, also called on the Deputy Minister to prioritize road infrastructure, noting that the social, health and economic development of the people depended largely on good and motorable roads.

She stressed that the Samenye-Barrier to Half- Assini Road, being a major route to the municipal capital, needed urgent attention to facilitate the movement of goods and services.

On health, she said pregnant women who needed to access medical care at the Government Hospital in Half-Assini often had to endure long and stressful journeys due to the poor road network.

The residents accused Madam Afo-Toffey of making unfulfilled promises, saying each time she addressed gatherings she told them that the contractor would soon move to site.

“We have run out of patience. We are reminding the Deputy Minister to show leadership by lobbying for the Samenye-Barrier to Half-Assini and New Town road to be asphalted,” Mrs Yankey said.

They further urged her to use her share of the District Assembly Common Fund to undertake the project for which the people voted her.

“We don’t want another election with stretch jeans and dancing without anything to show. Enough of the excuses,” the residents stated, adding that “we see through what she is doing, and we will take the necessary steps to vote her out if this continues.”

Madam Afo-Toffey is reported to have stated on various platforms that the road had been awarded on contract to Kingspork Construction Limited, but work was yet to begin as the contractor had not moved to site.
