Tamale, Aug 06, GNA – Fire has gutted the family house of the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology at Changli in the Tamale Metropolis.
The fire displaced several occupants and destroyed valuable property.
It caused extensive damage to rooms occupied by members of the family and other residents living in the compound house.
This occurred on Wednesday, August 05, 2026, at about 16:20 GMT, just a day before the first anniversary of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Dr Mohammed and several others.
Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly after receiving a distress call and managed to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade II (ADO II) Baba Hudu, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, confirmed the incident to journalists at Tamale.
He said the GNFS responded swiftly to the emergency upon receiving the distress call and worked to contain the fire.
Mr Hudu said the fire was successfully extinguished, and that investigations had commenced to establish its cause and assured that the outcome would be made public when completed.
Some affected occupants told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that they lost virtually all their belongings in the blaze, with items destroyed including clothing, personal documents, television sets, refrigerators, and other household appliances.
They described the incident as devastating and appealed to the government, benevolent organisations and members of the public for support to help them recover from their losses.
