JEA Mills Memorial Heritage to mark 14th Anniversary of President Mills’ Death

Accra, July 15, GNA– The J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage has announced a series of activities to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the death of President John Evans Atta Mills, Ghana’s only Head of State to die in office.

Addressing the media on Wednesday at the International Press Centre in Accra, Mr Alex Segbefia, Chairman of the Heritage, said the commemoration would begin with the press conference and culminate with a hockey tournament on July 25.

President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills died on July 24, 2012 at 1:40 p.m. He was the third President of the Fourth Republic.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sebgefia, who is also the Chief of State, Office of the Vice President, recalled President Mills’ call for unity: “It will be my duty as President to heal wounds and Unite Our Dear Nation. I intend to pursue relentlessly all avenues for entrenching peace and unity in all parts of the country as I am enjoined by the constitution to do.”_

The J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, incorporated on October 14, 2021, is a not-for-profit, non-partisan and charitable organisation established to preserve the late President’s legacy and promote democratic values and human development.

Scheduled activities for the 14th Anniversary

The 14th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026
at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, renowned cardio-thoracic surgeon and former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation will speak on the topic: “President John Evans Atta Mills, Fourteen Years On”

Ms. Hannah Serwah Tetteh, United Nations Under-Secretary and Special Representative for UNSMIL and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry will chair the occasion.

On Friday, July 24th, a Wreath-Laying ceremony and Memorial Service
will be held at Asomdwee Park, near Osu Castle

President John Dramani Mahama will lay a wreath on behalf of the Republic of Ghana. Other wreaths will be laid by or on behalf of Parliament, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, the family, the NDC, the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

President John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at the Theodosia Okoh National Hockey Pitch, Accra

The Heritage noted that the choice of Professor Frimpong-Boateng of the NPP as keynote speaker and Ms. Tetteh of the NDC as chairperson reflected President Mills’ spirit of inclusiveness and national unity.

The last major activity organised by the Heritage was the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture delivered last year by Madam Charlotte Osei, former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, on the topic: “Atta Mills: A Case Study for the Fourth Republic.”

The Heritage urged Ghanaians and the media to fully participate in all the activities planned for the July 2026 commemoration.
