Create Upper Tongu District for Us – Torgbui Agbohla Appeals to Mahama

Juapong (V/R), July 17, GNA – Torgbui Manklalo Agbohla VI, President of the Dorfor Traditional Council in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to consider creating a new district to be known as Upper Tongu District to improve administrative access and accelerate development in the area.

The appeal was made during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the 24-Hour Economy Market in Juapong on Thursday.

Torgbui Agbohla said Juapong and its surrounding communities were experiencing rapid population growth and increasing economic activity, which had placed significant pressure on existing social infrastructure, particularly healthcare services.

He appealed to the Government to urgently upgrade the Juapong health facility to a hospital to meet the growing healthcare needs of residents.

“Juapong is developing rapidly, and the population is increasing every day. One of our biggest challenges is healthcare, and we respectfully appeal to the Government to upgrade our health facility to hospital status to serve the people better,” he said.

The traditional ruler added that although the affected communities formed part of the North Tongu District, residents faced serious difficulties in accessing the district capital, Battor.

According to him, the district was geographically extensive, and residents often had to travel through three or four other districts and, in some cases, cross rivers before reaching Battor for administrative and official services.

“We appreciate the fact that we are part of North Tongu, but the district is too large, and accessibility remains a major challenge. We therefore appeal to Government to consider creating a new district comprising Juapong, Dorfor, Volo, Fodzoku and Torgorme, and name it Upper Tongu District,” Torgbui Agbohla stated.

He said the creation of the proposed district would bring governance and development closer to the people, improve access to public services, enhance local economic planning, and support the area’s growing population and commercial activities.

The appeal formed part of a broader address in which the traditional ruler thanked President Mahama for ongoing development interventions in the district, including road projects, educational infrastructure and the construction of the new 24-Hour Economy Market, which he described as a transformative project for Juapong and the wider North Tongu area.
