Glasgow (Scotland), July 27, GNA – Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu advanced to the men’s 100 metres semi-finals after dominating their respective heats on Day Five of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Azamati posted the fastest time of the heats, clocking a season-best 10.00 seconds, with compatriot Saminu close behind in 10.01.
However, Isaac Botsio failed to progress after finishing fourth in heat nine in 10.40.
Azamati and Saminu would now face a strong opponent in the semi-finals, including Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya.
In the women’s 100m, Deborah Acheampong finished third in heat eight but did not qualify for the next round.
In boxing, Precious Akai Netter secured a place in the quarter-finals after stopping Elijah Qiokata, while Desmond Pappoe advanced with a 3-2 split-decision victory over Josh Tonga in the men’s 75kg division.
The results leave Ghana with five boxers still in contention for medals.
Ebenezer Ankrah, however, exited the men’s 60kg competition after suffering a narrow 3-2 split-decision loss to Scotland’s Nicholas Devlin in the round of 16.
Ankrah appeared on course for victory heading into the final round but was deducted a point late in the bout, a decision that proved decisive in the outcome.
Jibril Muntari who drew by in the Round of 16 would come up against Northern Ireland’s Garyn McAllister in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Also, Daniel Plange would face Willie John McCartan as he eyes a place in the medal zone of the men’s super-heavyweight 90Kg.
Ghana’s women’s boxing campaign also ended early, with none of the three female qualifiers progressing beyond the opening round.
Ramatu Quaye was outclassed by Canada’s Amber-Jane in the round of 16, with all five judges scoring the contest in favour of the Canadian, who advanced to the quarter-finals.
In swimming, Nubia Adjei finished fourth in the women’s 50m backstroke, clocking 30.91 seconds in her second appearance at the Games.
Meanwhile, weightlifter Emmanuel Boateng placed seventh after recording a combined total of 282kg across the snatch and clean and jerk disciplines.
Despite mixed fortunes across disciplines, Ghana remained in contention for medals through its athletics and boxing teams as competition continued in Glasgow.
