Atebubu traders, drivers appeal for reconstruction of collapsed bridge

Atebubu, (Bono East) July 4, GNA-Traders and commercial drivers at Atebubu in the Bono East Region have appealed to the government to re-construct the collapsed Sataso Bridge at Adidwan on the Atebubu-Kumasi highway.

According to the traders, a downpour that hit the area collapsed the bridge about two months ago and that led to the diversion of that portion of the highway.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Atebubu, Mr Takyi Yeboah, the Chairman of the Atebubu Market Association noted that the collapse of the bridge had led to increase of transport fares due to the diversion of the road.

“Drivers now charge exorbitant fares because of the diversion of the road”, he stated, adding that: “The drivers now spend about five hours on the road instead of two hours”.

Mr Yeboah said the main highway was now inaccessible because of the collapsed bridge, worrying that the drivers ought to divert through Techiman after Ejura before getting to Kumasi.

According to him the drivers who plied the road now used more fuel for their vehicles and that had consequently led to a sharp increment in transport fares.

Mr Yeboah said that the reconstruction of the bridge would address the transportation challenges, reduce transport fares, and thereby boost the economic activities of the traders and drivers in the area.
