Wenchi (Bono), Sept. 2, GNA – The Wenchi Municipal Assembly (WMA) in the Bono Region has announced plans to construct a modern singeing plant at the Wenchi slaughterhouse following a Ghana News Agency (GNA) report on poor sanitary conditions at the facility.
The report highlighted the deteriorating state of the slaughterhouse and the practice by some butchers of using discarded vehicle tyres to singe slaughtered animals, raising concerns about public health and environmental safety.
Miss Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), announced the intervention when addressing the Assembly’s General Meeting at Wenchi.
She said the Assembly had also commenced renovation works on the abattoir to improve conditions at the facility.
Miss Gyamfi explained that the Assembly had approved and budgeted for the construction of the modern singeing plant, which would be equipped with a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) facility for butchers to singe slaughtered animals in a safer and more hygienic manner.
She said the initiative formed part of the Assembly’s commitment to improving environmental health and ensuring that meat processed at the abattoir was safe for public consumption.
The MCE noted that the project would help eliminate the use of worn-out vehicle tyres and other unsafe materials for singeing animals, a practice that has generated concern among residents and health authorities.
Mr Cosmos Goodman, Chairman of the Environmental Health Sub-Committee of the Assembly and Assembly Member for the Tromeso Electoral Area, commended the Assembly for the planned project.
He expressed concern about what he described as unacceptable and unhygienic practices by some chop bar operators and food vendors who singe slaughtered animals in open spaces within the municipality.
Mr Goodman said the construction of the modern singeing plant would help improve sanitation standards and promote public health in the municipality.
